Dubrovnik or Bust
Today we arrived in Dubrovnik, Croatia. It is beautiful. Flying in and seeing the mountains on one side and the ocean on the other took my breath away. We flew all through the night. I didn't get much sleep on the plane. It was a very early morning when we landed in Dubrovnik. Uber brought us to our hostel where we left our bags before heading down to the old town to explore.
The first stop over the day was to do a kayaking tour. Never would I have imagined how challenging it would be to paddle on the ocean on a day it looks so calm. We peddled about 9 km. We did hand them kayaks and I'm in a girl who was a doctor in London who was on holiday. She and I shared the paddling as we run around the island. After touring we outside of the island we went along the coast of Dubrovnik and stopped for a light lunch in a cave where we could swim with fish and relax. My arms definitely needed that. While we were kayaking around the island there were people cliff jumping and nude sun bathing. They're also lots of hiking trails on the island so if I get the chance I would like to explore it there.
After lunch and swimming in the cave it was time to hop back in the kayak and head back to the port. I would have expected the way back to be much easier because I thought the current would have brought us back since we fought it on the way out. However we were stopped from having an easy time by strong winds. There were lots of large waves and plenty of white caps to paddle through. Even though the last part of the trip was shorter it was more challenging because we were tired and the water had been rough. We made it though. It was a lot of fun. But I am tired.
When we're done kayaking it was time to find myself food. Because of the time zone change and traveling my food schedule is way off. So it was a light dinner early tonight. I tried some new food. Not entirely sure what it was but it was tasty. We ate down by the water.
The final main activity for the day was a walking tour of Old Dubrovnik. We met the tour group outside the city walls and learned a lot about the history of the creation of Dubrovnik. I did not know what a colorful history it had. I also didn't know that it had been such a strong hold for many years. The city much resembles Venice. The stonework of the city is beautiful. I like the narrow streets and the design. One has to be careful when walking because the stones can be slippery. They're also lots of stairs to climb around on. The city is filled with history. One interesting fact I found out today was that it had once been bombed 2000 times in one day.
For any Game of Thrones we got to see many of the sites where the filming took place. One of my favorites was from when Cersei did her walk of shame. We saw the Spanish steps. We also saw some of the places where they filled the final scenes of the show. Of course there was a lot of CGI that went into the show but the essence of the city still lingers in the show. There's plenty to see for Game of Throne fans. The walking tour concluded right as the sun began to set. It was beautiful to see this city light up. I walked a little longer before heading back to the hospital. It's an early night but I haven't slept much in the past 36 hours.
